The encoding of arbitrary surfaces in 3-dimensional space

A procedure is proposed which uses some basic aspects of topology for the description and encoding of arbitrary surfaces. Surfaces are triangulated in a specific way and the triangulation provides a simplicial chain code which is related to the octagonal chain code for planar curves.
