A coding approach to pattern recognition

A “coding” process has been often used to explain aspects of human perception and cognition. Three computer programs are described which employ a “coding method” to learn to recognize classes of number sequences representing line drawings. A comparison of the programs' performance is made with a “typical” human subject on a concept learning experiment involving the sequences, and with a more sophisticated recognition program written by the author. The approach forms an interesting framework for considering methods for automatic pattern recognition.
