Game-dynamical aspects of the prisoner's dilemma

A game-dynamical analysis of the iterated prisoner's dilemma reveals its complexity and unpredictability. Even if one considers only those strategies where the probability for cooperation depends entirely on the last move, one finds stable polymorphisms, multiple equilibria, periodic attractors, and heteroclinic cycles.
