• It is the first time to deal with the nonlinear barotropic-baroclinic interaction problem based on the non-equal two-layer model by using the method of multiple scales.
• The evolutions of both the barotropic flow and the baroclinic flow are described by coupled nonlinear Boussinesq equations.
• The dynamics of the nonlinear coherent structures is analyzed from both qualitative and quantitative viewpoints.
• The effect of the non-equal fluid parameter on the propagation of coherent structures is given.
