Reactor scale modeling of quorum sensing induced biofilm dispersal

Highlights:
• A 1D reactor scale model for quorum sensing controlled biofilm dispersal is presented and studied. It consists of 3 ODEs.
• The system, depending on parameters, will either attain (a) an upregulated steady state, or (b) a downregulated steady state, or (c) oscillate between down- and upregulated behaviour.
• Cases (a), (b) corrspond to continuous erosion, case (c) to almost instantaneous sloughing of biofilm.
• For comparison a simpler model for starvation controlled biofilm dispersal is included and analysed (2 ODEs).
