• A semi-implicit approach for sediment transport problem with gravitational effects has been proposed.

• In particular, we propose a first and a second order discretization, that can be applied to a wide range of bedload models.

• The numerical results show that the method allows us to notably reduce computational efforts without a significant loss of accuracy in the results.
