• MPM-2P is introduced to speed-up the numerical solution of two-phase flow problems.
• A modified operator splitting method is proposed to reduce the computational cost of the simulation of the two-phase flows.
• The new algorithm replaces full updates of local solutions by reusing basis functions computed by the MRCM at an earlier time of the simulation.
