A prototype decision support system in hypermedia for operational control of hazardous material shipments

Recent advances in information technology, in particular satellite location and communications, have made real-time transit control of hazardous materials feasible. The information exchange between mobile units and control centers can include text, audio, graphics, and video. Extensive data analyses at the control centers can help vehicles carrying hazardous materials to assess driving conditions and select safe and cost-effective routes. A prototype decision-support system has been developed in HyperCard that can support an operator at a control center in risk assessment and route guidance. The paper also discusses issues of implementation and the need for further research.
