摘要

This article focuses on the possible roles and opportunities for the information professional in the design and development of expert systems. It is based on both the existing literature and interviews with personnel involved in expert system work in various universities and polytechnics in the U.K. The conclusions indicate that there may be roles for information professionals in the burgeoning world of expert systems but that they are dependent on a radical reappraisal of LIS (library and information studies) curricula, improved cross-disciplinary exchanges between the computer and information sciences, and a commitment by the Library and Information profession to improve its status and public image so that those outside the discipline are aware of the skills and attributes that it has to offer.
