The Livermore intelligent gateway: An integrated information processing environment

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory developed the Intelligent Gateway software in work that began in 1975. The Intelligent Gateway creates a framework that links distributed, heterogeneous computer resources and provides a single user interface such that a “virtual information system” can be tailored to any user's idiosyncratic needs. The Gateway can provide access to external services as well as serve as resident host for installation of local databases and information processing tools. Thus, it provides an integrated information processing environment to support the complete range of scientific and technical information needs.
