A discrete orthogonal transform based on spherical harmonics

A discrete orthogonal transform of a discrete function defined on a sphere, based on spherical harmonics, is proposed. Analogy with the discrete Fourier transform is stressed. Its use for filtering, compressing and estimating the spectrum of an isotropic random field defined on a sphere is illustrated.
