Implications for the design of computer-based instruction screens

The continued growth of the microcomputer as an interactive medium has created a vast market for instructional software which includes applications from simple drill and practice programs to complex simulations. A survey of these programs finds both effective and ineffective applications of instructional design. More importantly though, is the recognition that the design of screen displays may be the most neglected aspect of the instructional design process.The computer screen is often compared to the printed page and critiqued in terms of the attributes of the printed page. In addition, current guidelines for screen design are often based on principles derived from research on printed instruction even though the two are recognized as different forms of presentation and have different strengths and limitations. It appears important then, that researchers and CBI designers pursue different alternatives to screen design than simply those generated from research on text-based materials to fully utilize the potential of the microcomputer.
