Next generation DVD: application requirements and technology

DVD has proven to be one of the very successful consumer products ever. The broad and enthusiastic consumer acceptance of DVD is due to a number of factors such as, high picture quality, multi-channel surround sound capability, ease of random access, and added value program content. While the consumer interest and demand for current DVD is anticipated to continue unabated for several more years, both content owners and manufacturers have already begun the process of developing advanced technologies, formats and concepts that will define the capabilities of next generation DVD.In this paper, we first present an overview of details of current generation DVD. Next, we present our view of the basic application requirements for high definition DVD. We then outline current technical proposals under consideration. Next, we describe an approach that is well matched to the needs of content owners as it applies over a spectrum of titles that range from short to long playing time, and with varying amount of added value material. Finally, we summarize our findings.
