How to integrate access control mechanisms into digital HDTV systems?

Technical progresses made in compression and transmission of digital signals will perhaps soon make realistic an all-digital HDTV system. To become economically viable, such system will most certainly have to deal with conditional access mechanisms. The sooner these mechanisms are taken into account in the definition and specification of the system, the easier their implementation is. Access control mechanisms will be all the more efficient as appropriate synchronization and signalling exist in the digital signal. This paper introduces the general architecture of a conditional access system and points out most of the specific requirements of conditional access that each designer should be aware of when specifying a digital TV system.
