Motion estimation using combined shape and edge matching

This paper describes a new motion estimation algorithm that can be used in motion compensated standards conversions. As an example, we propose a scanning rate conversion method for motion compensated field rate upconversion (FRU) from an interlaced 50 Hz to progressive 100 Hz format. Motion estimation is done on the block matching basis using a bit level classification approach (BLC). Motion vector selection is controlled by both the quantized rough shape and the edge information of the image. Non-linear vector postprocessing is used to obtain a consistent and uniform vector field. Block segmentation is used to improve the accuracy of the vector field.
