摘要

This paper presents a new approach for efficient variable length coding which employs the source splitting and component encoding. In order to improve the performance of the Huffman encoding of (r, l) symbols which are obtained from the zigzag scanning of the quantized DCT coefficients, a simple method is introduced for splitting a source into two sources of smaller entropies with no overhead information to be transmitted for reconstructing the outcomes of the original source. It is proved analytically that there always exist nonnegative source splitting gains which are closely related to reduction of the average codelength of the variable length code, which is also approved by experiments with (r, l) symbols.
