• In this correspondence, we present two important design vulnerabilities of Sarreshtedari’s scheme.
• The first one is the loss of protection for channel code parity bits, which will lead to the unsuccessful reconstruction of image.
• The second one is the loss of tampering discrimination ability.
• We use abundant experiments to verify our consideration.
• Aiming to resolve these important design vulnerabilities, we propose an enhanced fragile watermarking scheme to digital image protection and self-recovery in this paper.
• Experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.
