A review of fully interactive video on demand

Is Video on Demand coming of age? From the early 1980s there have been various experiments on fully interactive video on demand services, and since the early 1990s, there has been a renewed and increased interest in the area as various technologies have emerged enabling such services to be offered in a technically feasible manner. This paper reviews the major technical aspects of early fully-digital Video on Demand systems, with an emphasis on the trial that British Telecommunications ran in the UK in 1994. Service, system, transmission, server and set-top aspects are covered, and there are some comments made on the customer experience of such services.
