Error resilience and concealment performance for MPEG-4 frame-based video coding

This paper addresses the general problem of error resilience and concealment in the context of content-based video coding schemes, such as the new MPEG-4 video coding standard. In the first part of the paper, the most important error resilience tools available in the literature are studied, organized and classified according to three main classes, notably: error resilient source coding, channel coding and decoding, and error concealment. In the second part, the performance of the MPEG-4 error resilient frame-based syntax, which addresses simple mobile communications, is studied with a meaningful set of test conditions and three different concealment schemes.
