Spatial reasoning with a qualitative representation

A qualitative representation for shape and space in two dimensions, and methods for carrying out simple spatial reasoning tasks using this representation are described. The representation provides facilities that enable qualitative physics systems to use qualitative methods not only at the process level, but also at the constraint and motion analysis level. It also provides qualitative methods that could be applied to conventional spatial reasoning applications, such as high level robot programming.
