Towards a journalist-based news recommendation system: The Wesomender approach

•We study the characteristics of a hybrid news recommender based on the five W’s of journalism (who, what, where, when, and why).•We design an adaptive framework for the automatic configuration of recommenders.•We apply the proposed recommending engine to the journalism domain.•We perform an evaluation with professional journalists to test the advantages of the proposed recommender.
