The negative effects of citing with a national orientation in terms of recognition: National and international citations in natural-sciences papers from Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK
作者:
Highlights:
• We analyze the research output of three leading European research economies (Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK).
• We ask whether highly-cited papers from these countries are based on national or internationally oriented resources.
• To evaluate change over time, we include papers published in the countries from 2004, 2009, and 2014.
• Papers from Germany or the Netherlands are less likely to be highly-cited if they also cite ‘domestic’ research.
• A possible reason for the result is that researchers “over-cite” the papers from their own country.
