摘要

This paper traces the evolution of thought and techniques in shape recognition using volumetric primitives. We attempt to draw lessons from a relatively long history of studies in this area, and also focus on the recent developments that are inspired by Biederman's scheme of Recognition-By-Components. We identify a number of issues as a basis for assessing these achievements, and propose some methodological considerations for choosing a way forward.
