Configuration vs. adaptation for business process variant maintenance: An empirical study

• For process variant modeling approaches, we define modularization support and variant construction direction (configuration or adaptation) as two major control-flow related dimensions.

• We classify existing approaches along the two dimensions.

• We set up a task-based user study for representatively comparing vBPMN and C-YAWL w.r.t. their support of process variant maintainability for a simple and a complex model.

• For each response variable (success rate, user contentment and execution speed), vBPMN performs significantly better than C-YAWL. We argue that this is mainly due to vBPMN's advanced modularization support.
