摘要

Three broadly-defined types of public policies for information management are posited and described. The typology is based on the values assigned by society to the desirability of harboring or disseminating certain kinds of knowledge. The policy types are formulated according to secret, private, and public knowledge. It is urged that information scientists recognize their important political role in all three areas.
