摘要

Most of the literature for both fully automatic and semi-automatic book indexing systems presupposes a measure of computer expertise and abundant machine-readable text. The author considers the question of the utility of a book indexing computer program for those without computer background or experience. APL timesharing systems seem well adapted to support a simple, “portable” and relatively inexpensive system to operate for this purpose. The author's APLDEX system uses 8 “commands” such as POST, SORT and FORMAT to produce an index of three hierarchial levels suitable for use as a substitute for “manuscript” indexes produced manually. Using the system in situations when time is a factor in the evaluation of alternatives, APLDEX is not unreasonable in cost. A 1200-entry index can be produced in just over one working day for a cost of approx. $150. Additional information about the APLDEX system can be obtained by writing to the author.
