• We performed a meta-analysis of 107 recent e-learning acceptance studies.

• We identified the most commonly used external factors of Technology Acceptance Model.

• They are Self-Efficacy, Subjective Norm, Enjoyment, Computer Anxiety and Experience.

• We identified the effects of these factors on students' perceptions of e-learning.

• As a result the study proposes an extended technology acceptance model for e-learning.
