The direct variational grid generation method extended to curves

The direct variational grid generation method is extended to weighted grids on smooth curves in R3 by introducing a new weighted-chord functional. The new functional is positive definite at a global minimum, but not everywhere convex. Lack of convexity appears to a significant obstacle in extending the direct variational approach to surface grid generation.
