Making a computer club for Douglass Elemementary School required external help and internal support. At the end of the first school year a small independent community had grown surrounding such high-minded ideas as scaffolded learning, self control, and community service, but by the beginning of the next school year it was unclear if it could be sustained. We discuss how difficult it can be to create a sustainable innovation.
