A spatially layered hierarchical approach to video coding

Layered techniques offer attractive features for video coding in several applications including high definition TV (HDTV). After describing these in general, we propose an approach in which the layering is performed in the pel domain using a modified version of the conventional spatial pyramid technique. Comparisons are made with the alternative methods of subband coding and layering of DCT coefficients. Results with HDTV pictures were first demonstrated on 3 November 1992.
