摘要

Based on the Q-coder designed by IBM researchers, a novel parallel real-time implementation is developed in this paper for both encoding and decoding of black and white images. In this algorithm, a tree array is established to implement binary arithmetic coding at different levels. Within each basic cycle, up to 4 bits are processed which is enabled by the design of parallel tree. In fact, the parallel codec can also be further extended theoretically to any number of bits which are to be processed in parallel. The implication involved will be the design of internal buffer where each bit renormalized locally is to be updated by the PE at the next level before it reaches the top of the tree array.
